Cape Cod Restaurant Week – May 16-22, 2011

May 17th, 2011 by cassels

Cape Cod Restaurant Week brings the best out of the Cape's chefsWe all enjoy going out to dinner, and this week anyone who visits Cape Cod is in for a real treat. A total of 46 restaurants across all of Cape Cod will participate in the semi-annual Restaurant Week, offering 3 or 4 course exhibition menus with prix fixe pricing of just $25 – $35 per person. So you get to experience the creativity of some of New England’s best chefs at incredible prices! At the Inn, we are very lucky to be within walking distance of two of the participating restaurants: The Old Yarmouth Inn, just two minutes walk  from us, and The Lyric, only ten minutes walk away. Both are personal favorites of ours, and we certainly don’t need much encouragement to dine at either one. Alternatively, you might consider The Naked Oyster, yet another favorite of ours, and only ten minutes by car in Hyannis Main Street. If that’s not being spoilt for choice we don’t know what is.

So why not combine a stay at the inn, (taking advantage of our great May deals) with a couple of wonderful meals at one of the many participating restaurants. Hope to see you soon!

Cape Cod has a fabulous choice of great New Year’s Eve Restaurants

New Year's Eve Dining in Yarmouth Port

New Year's Eve Dining in Yarmouth Port

The end of another great year beckons us to consider where we should spend this New Year’s Eve 2010 – can it really be eleven years since we saw in the turn of the century. I remember some friends planning that momentous occasion several months in advance.

Whilst there is no need to panic yet, as there appears to be some availability at most venues, you should not delay in making your arrangements for your celebrations this New Year’s Eve. So our brief review of what some of the best Cape Cod restaurants are offering, may help you to decide sooner rather than later.

We are rolling into our inn’s New Year 2010 Package, a number of indulgences including champagne and Belgian chocolates, but guests will also be able to enjoy a special dinner at the Old Yarmouth Inn, just a five minutes walk from our inn, and included in the same package. For anyone not staying at 4 Summer Street, the NYE’s menu will be available “prix fixe” for $43 a head. There are few restaurants on Cape Cod more popular than the OYI, and it’s easy to see why from the moment you enter this historic, haunted tavern. The warmth of the greeting you receive from the proprietors, Arpad and Sheila, can almost match the roaring log fires of this 1697 gem. As Europeans, we describe the cuisine as traditional New England at it’s best, and we hear the enthusiastic glowing reviews from hundreds of our guests during every breakfast time back at our inn. All in all, an experience not to be missed, and if you stay with us, you will not have the worry of getting home when the evening ends.

Well, if none of this appeals, look no further than The Lyric, which is once again, a short walk from our bed and breakfast in the opposite direction. This beautifully designed restaurant has a contemporary but intimate ambience and is a delightful setting for any occasion. The cuisine is contemporary American, carefully crafted and beautifully presented. Anne the proprietor, is also an accomplished singer and I would be surprised if she does not make an appearance on New Years Eve. A mouth-watering five course prix fixe multi choice menu is proposed for an early or late sitting at $65 or $75 per person respectively.

There’s even more to tempt you, should this have not done the trick. A mere ten minutes by car brings you to the Red Pheasant on the edge of Dennis Village. Once again, this is a restaurant with a glowing reputation, built by it’s owner chef  Bill Atwood Jnr., his father before him, and his lovely wife Denise. The restaurant has a delightful ambience and is set in a converted 200 year old barn, an enticing setting for any New Years Eve celebration. Add to this the creative and classic cuisine rolled into this years special NYE menu, not to mention an impressive wine cellar, and you have the makings of a great evening out. The four course prix fixe is $80 for the earlier sitting or $100 per person seeing the New Year in with a champagne toast at midnight and dancing to the music of Blues Alley.

We do hope you’re tempted! We certainly are. There is also a lot going on in Yarmouth Port on New Year’s Day for those of you who do decide to stay overnight with us. Wherever you end up, Helen and I hope you have a great evening of celebration, and we wish you a healthy and happy 2011.

The A to Z of Cape Cod ice cream parlours

April 24th, 2010 by cassels

lick fast Strawberry Sundae No summer trip to Cape Cod is complete without a visit or two to one or more of the local ice cream shops that make their own ice cream. There is no shortage of choice, and a lot of people develop a taste for one shop in particular, ourselves included. We are delighted to see that Smugglers on Main Street in Dennis has re-opened for the 2010 season – we’ll stop by whenever we get the opportunity in the coming weeks, and last summer we often found that their wonderful ice cream made a great dessert after a lobster roll at the Sesuit Harbor Cafe. Both are so conveniently located within a ten minutes scenic drive from our Yarmouth Port Bed and Breakfast Inn.

Despite Smugglers being our favourite source of ice cream, we now and then try somewhere else in another area of the Cape, and have rarely been disappointed. For example, you cannot talk about ice cream without mentioning the very popular Four Seas in Centerville or Dennisport’s Sundae School. In both cases, expect to wait in line out the door on those hot summer days in July and August, but it will be worth it – my favourite flavors at Sundae School are the banana (made with real bananas) and the Bass River Mud : coffee, roasted almonds, choc. chip with fudge stripe……..just scrummy !

Pain d’Avignon in Hyannis, Cape Cod, not just Vaucluse!

April 9th, 2010 by cassels

Close-up of pastries, with friend Today as the temperature hit the mid seventies, we were looking for a late lunch and somewhere to sit outside in the sunshine that was not going to take too long. We had been running a few errands in downtown Hyannis and only had time to grab a quick bite. Helen suggested we might find what we were looking for at the bakery cafe/restaurant Pain d’Avignon. Over the last few months we had heard several very favorable reports from people we know, who had dined at this restaurant, so we wanted to take a look for ourselves. Pain d’ Avignon, as you will probably guess from the name, is a very successful “traditional French bakery”, and for all our years living in the south of France we can certainly vouch for its authenticity.

Welcome back Cookes Seafood in Hyannis

March 12th, 2010 by cassels

Oh how we have missed you during the winter. Your return each year serves the Cape Cod community in two invaluable respects. The first of these is a rather obvious one to all of us who know and love you : you serve the freshest of fish and seafood, cleanly cooked to perfection, and always with a smile. Then there’s the welcome reminder your re-opening brings that spring is just around the corner – thank you for that!

Only ten minutes from our Yarmouth Port inn, CookesDSC_0303  is a popular choice for tourists and Cape Cod residents alike, with it’ relaxed ambience. The dining salon was bustling on the evening last week that we decided to pay our visit. From the expressions on many diners faces, ours included, and the occasional nod of approval, I guess we can only draw one conclusion : it’s business as usual, and we can’t wait to return. Oh and the other thing that spring is on its way. Well we really already knew this after last week’s wonderful sunshine, everyone seemed to be out getting that whiff of ocean air that we find so envigourating.

If you dont already know Cape Cod or believe this year is as good as any to renew your acquaintance, well now is the time to start making those plans. Why not take a look at Mid-Cape along Cape Cod Bay, you will not be disapointed. Who knows, you might just choose to spend some time with us.

Dine well during your Cape Cod Inn experience

February 25th, 2010 by cassels

It is a high priority for most innkeepers to ensure that their guests have great dining experiences during their stay. Disappointing meals can, after all, cast a shadow on that hard earned vacation or weekend break. Of course, after one of our delicious 4-course breakfasts, it’s hard to think of lunch or dinner, but it’s amazing how the taste buds start to revive after a few hours of Cape Cod exploring!corton atlantic turbot ‘saveurs du terroir’ part 3

Here on Cape Cod, our task as innkeepers in this respect, is made a lot easier, as the quality of restaurants is generally good by most standards. Nevertheless, we recommend a carefully chosen handful of restaurants that we feel reflect a wide range of tastes, from fine dining to bar snacks.

There can be few locations on the Cape that have three first class restaurants within walking distance. The award-winning  Old Yarmouth Inn is just a stroll across the lawn for our lucky guests. The service is friendly, the food is consistently good, and the wine cellar carefully chosen. The Inaho, 200 yards from our inn, is a very highly rated authentic Japanese experience, complete with sushi bar. Five minutes further walk along Yarmouth Port’s historic main street brings you to the Lyric, with its fine contemporary cuisine, accompanied some evenings with live piano.

Just 5 minutes drive brings you to two more of our favourite eating places: The Blue Moon Bistro, where you will find a charming intimate setting combined with personal service and innovative cuisine;  and the Black Sheep Bah & Grill, who recently won a Cape Cod award for their tasty burgers. We love the relaxed, friendly atmosphere of this sports bar, and of course the great food!

A further advantage of staying, or indeed living year round, on this mid-Cape stretch of Route 6A, is that the many restaurants in Hyannis are only 8 minutes away by car. The Naked Oyster is highly recommended, as indeed are Alberto’s for great Italian cuisine and the Brazilian Grill  for a fun night out with friends at an authentic Brazilian rodizio.

A real personal favourite is the Ocean House, which, although in Dennisport, is only 20 minutes drive from the Inn. And boy, is it worth the drive! This beautifully appointed stylish restaurant makes the most if its fabulous ocean front setting with large windows looking out on to the beach and the crashing surf beyond. Together with the creative Prosciutto & Fig Bruschettacuisine, this makes for a dining experience not to be missed.

Quite often guests will ask us for a dinner recommendation to suit their itinerary for the day, which might place them in Chatham or Orleans for the evening. In Chatham we have enjoyed The Impudent Oyster and Chatham Bars Inn, and another favourite is 28 Atlantic, overlooking Pleasant bay between Orleans and Chatham. The last two require smarter dress, so gentlemen be sure to bring blazer and slacks, it will be worth it for the ocean views alone at both these restaurants.

During the warmer months, no trip to Cape Cod is complete without a visit to the Mattakeese Wharf restaurant, with its great seafood and harbour sunsets. And if you’re looking for that casual experience with a difference, try the outdoor Sesuit Harbor Cafe, where diners enjoy views of tiny Sesuit Harbor, with the comings and goings of fishing and private boats. The Wellfleet Bookstore Restaurant will serve you up the finest, freshest Wellfleet oysters, just 100 yards from the oyster beds, while you sit on the upper deck overlooking the magnificent Cape Cod Bay.

Even if you haven’t managed to digest all this foodie information, we would love the opportunity to prove to you what other fun things you can do while staying at the inn. Hope to see you soon!

Bed and breakfast Cape Cod: Nearby Popular Restaurants

February 20th, 2009 by cassels

A couple miles south of our Cape Cod Bed and Breakfast, on the other side of the peninsula, is a popular seafood and chowder house called Skipper Restaurant. They are well-known around here for their delicious chowders.

Enjoy classic New England Clam Cowder around the Cape!

They have both indoor and outdoor seating (although you may want to wait on sitting outside for a few more months!) and may folks have said they have the best New England clam chowder they have ever enjoyed!

Another popular item is the lobster club sandwich. They serve 10 oz. of lobster in a toasted grinder, and folks have really raved about them. The restaurant is right on the beach, so it is a great location for a walk after a filling meal.

Just one idea on how to make the beat of trip to our Bed and Breakfast Cape Cod!
