Google Celebrates Cape Cod’s Edward Gorey Birthday!

The Edward Gorey House and MuseumHappy Birthday Mr Gorey! We’re sure most of you know that we are very priviliged to have the Edward Gorey House just a 5 minute walk from the inn, and today EVERYONE gets to see his imaginative works as the “Google Doodle” of the day!

The museum, which was his home until his death in 2000, is one of the most fascinating places we’ve ever visited………you walk in here and now, but you are transported into the magical, dark and surreal world of this genius, and when you step outside it is a bit of a shock to be back in the real world! But it’s really worth it, and the icing on the cake is the small gift shop where you can buy unique items for yourself or someone special.

The museum re-opens for the season on April 18th, with a new exhibit to celebrate the 50th anniversary of “The Vinegar Works”, so why not plan a stay at the inn and tie in a great morning or afternoon at the Edward Gorey House. Quote this blog and we’ll pay for your entry!

Edward Gorey House In Cape Cod Re-opens For 2012 Season

We always know that summer is just around the corner when “seasonal” museums and restaurants begin to re-open after the winter. Last weekend saw the local opening of the Edward Gorey House, which is just a short walk from the inn. We have guests stay at the inn who are avid fans of Gorey, and they travel  several times a year from their home in Dallas, Texas, to visit the museum . So whenever we receive a reservation from them we know something is about to happen at the Gorey House! The grand opening last weekend included a fantastic new exhibiton of  “Gorey Envelope Art” showing the artist’s skills of decorating envelopes containing letters to his friend and idea collaborator Peter Neumeyer (learn more by clicking here).

One of the interesting aberrations resulting from a visit to the Gorey House is that you come away feeling like you stepped sideways into another world, one which is hard to forget, and one which you yearn to return to time and again. So make sure you plan your visit to Yarmouth Port and Cape Cod to include this fascinating and haunting home.

Cape Cod’s Edward Gorey House Re-opens

Visit The Edward Gorey House in Yarmouth PortAmidst all the springtime beauty on the Cape this time of year, there are a host of interesting places that reopen for the season. We welcome back all of these, but none more so than The Gorey House, which is a gentle five minute walk from our bed and breakfast, The Inn At Cape Cod, on Yarmouth Port’s village green.

If you are unacquainted with the life and works of Edward Gorey, you will find an hour in this museum a richly rewarding experience, and you will doubtless come away with a gift or two from the shop – you are in for a treat!

There are many quirky exhibits to help celebrate the 10th anniversary of  The House, and the admission price remains extremely reasonable. This acclaimed artist and writer has a considerable international following, as well as the U.S., however you do not have to be a Gorey fan to enjoy and appreciate his incredibly diverse works.

There are always a number of events and new exhibits to make all the more reason to plan a visit. For example, the 2011 special exhibit is “Edward Gorey and the Performing Arts”. Our favourite event is the annual “Pets around the Common Day”, which takes place this year in September.

Cape Cod, cats, and stardom: Siobhan Magnus

The latest American Idol series has produced a home-grown Cape Cod talent in the lovely, gifted singer Siobhan Magnus. But what is the relevance to a Cape Cod bed and breakfast inn? Well, she is a real cat (and Edward Gorey) lover, so much so that on her right arm you can see a tattoo of Edward Gorey’s Gashlycrumb Tinies, and if you know anything about the man himself, you will know he also was a true “cat person”. His fantastic, historic home, which now houses the  Edward Gorey House museum, is just a five-minute walk from our inn, and is now open for the 2010 season.

The Borsari Gallery & tea rooms – another wonderful Cape Cod asset

As members of a local concierge group, we are privileged to be invited each month to a Cape Cod venue where we can experience what is on offer and tell our guests about it later. Project 365 #1: 010110 Off The Starting Blocks This week we went to the Borsari Gallery & Tea Rooms in Dennis village, less than 10 minutes from our inn. What a wonderful building, an old barn built with the timbers of a 19th century Cape Cod hotel which was destroyed in a storm. The artwork on display is superb, very evocative and diverse, and the icing on the cake is that you can treat yourself to a wonderful, traditional afternoon tea,  including Devon clotted cream and old fashioned cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off.

Poppies, Isle of Shoal, by Claude Hassam Whether you have come to Cape Cod for the glorious beaches, stunning vistas or the serene calm, vacation or weekend break, you will have the opportunity if not the inclination, to visit any number of artists’ and craftspeoples’ exhibitions, which are mostly displayed in their private homes. The many things you will see and love about the Cape during your stay, have contributed to the inspiration of a great many artists and will no doubt continue to do so. You will be able to appreciate their work all the more as a result. There is, if you explore off the beaten track a little, an interesting mix of inhabitants who have been honing their craft here for years, and relative new arrivals.

Cape Cod’s museums not just for rainy days?

DSC_0642 The average visitor to Cape Cod in the shoulder season will be likely to take in at least one museum during his or her stay. Even weekenders often find the time, and are well rewarded from what we hear of their experiences. It is perhaps  fair to say that the summer months do not drive as many tourists towards the museums as they should – with the warm weather come the many outdoor attractions that visitors to the Cape have to choose from.
