The Unique Cape Cod Experience. Informed Hosts and Day One's Tour
If you have been residents on Cape Cod like we have for the last 12 years, and have been in its Tourist Industry all that time, it enables you to be informed
enough to help guests get the most from their stay in this heavenly place. We have that extra insight having come here from France during 2006. We
view things from that extra perspective that aliens often have.
So what are the components, in our opinion, that can add up to that “Unique Cape Cod Experience”? These might vary according whom you ask of course.
If all you have time for on your first visit is 3 or 4 nights, location of your base is all important. You will be better oriented after you have read
our trilogy of location blogs. These are aimed for you to come to your own conclusion. We are going to get beyond giving you just a list of all you
should see and do. Our picks are from our own personal experiences and are time related.
Imagine you spend 4 nights on Cape Cod. That will allow you to have 3 full days here. If you arrive in our vicinity between 2 and 3 pm, a little too early
to check in, head straight for Sesuit Harbor Cafe & Raw Bar, to sample the world famous Lobster Roll in one of the best locations for it and in
picturesque waterside surroundings. Relax a bit in this wonderfull Cape experience. We are but 12 minutes away.
When Emma has settled you in, take a refreshing dip at our residents beach, 6 minutes walk away. You may have spent a few hours travelling, so wouldn’t
it be nice to leave the car in our private parking, and just saunter to any one of our three great local restaurants – choose between Japaneese, traditional
New England or modern American Cuisine – but there’s time to take in a spectacular sunset at our stunning local boardwalk. Cape Cod serenity arguably
at its best and it fits in with dinner. Time to forge your plans for the exciting days ahead of you – Mike and Helen have prepared a promising day’s
itinerary around the western half of The Cape complete with marked map and written commentary. They did say that the distances are short so not much
time is spent in the car.
Day one: The self-guided tour you take at your own pace and linger longer in the places that please you the most. Thousands of
visitors, who are unresearched, routinely miss so many highlights in their rush to get to Provincetown, the one place most first timers have heard
of.
Highlights: Brewster General Store, Fort Hill lookout, Marconi clifftop (National Seashore)- keep your parking ticket,
Wellfleet (our favourite!)village and harbor including lunch on the upper deck of The Bookstore Cafe overlooking The Bay and Mayo Beach. The
Bookstore is a must for plentiful fresh fish and seafood, including its world famous oysters. Onward to Provincetown and if you can find parking,
spend an hour here at the most. Herrings Cove Beach or Race Point Beach – re-use your parking ticket, for whale sightings included. Now on to Chatham arriving mid afternoon following Route 28 down
from Orleans for spectacular water views.
There is no disputing the Charm of Chatham. You should allow 3 hours here. A visit to Fish Pier to see the seals performing close-up as they greet each returning fishing boat is a heart-warming
sight that we never grow tired of. The Main Street is enthrallingly enjoyable. Visit Chatham Lighthouse and the beach across the street.We don’t need
much of an excuse to visit the wonderfully colonial Chatham Bars Inn perched on the hillside with the best water view in town. Leave your car with
the valet at the rear of the hotel and head for the terrace, where you can savour the moment, cocktail in hand sharing dishes from the light fayre
menu. This is all so wonderful that you may have to wait 10 – 20 minutes for a table.
You never tire of Chatham, but you can always return another time. When you are ready, take Route 28 along the southern shore of Cape Cod back towards
Hyannis. There are several areas along this route, which were amongst the first developed when The Kennedy family helped make Cape Cod and The
Islands popular.
If you have got us to book ahead for you, make your way to a firm favourite, The Mattakeese Wharf,
which is a great fish and seafood restaurant with fabulous views across Barnstable Harbor – time your visit to catch the sun setting. Wow!! So this
has been your first taste of Cape Cod. What a day!
