In Search of The Cape Cod Lobster Roll,,,,,with water views.
Spring, Summer and early Fall, I find it hard to resist seafood, the daily catch served fresh from local waters. My two favourite dishes are pan seared
scallops and lobster. The small sweet Nantucket Bay scallops are normally around during September – they are amazingly tasty. But otherwise you will
find scallops on the menu at most restaurants on Cape Cod.
Good quality lobster is something that we Europeans are not used to. So when we arrive in New England for the first time, we need to make up for lost time!
I have been doing that since our arrival in 2006. During the Spring and Summer, through Columbus Day the second weekend in October, Cape Cod’s clam
shacks and seafood cafes come into their own. They are by and large, the best source of the Cape Cod lobster roll, which is typically served chilled
with a little lettuce and a touch of mayo in a toasted hot dog roll…..yummy!!!!
Cape residents and frequent summer visitors will have their favourite place/s to get a lobster roll. We swap notes on these places with friends, and there
is often a new place to try as a result. My top ones, and it would not be fair to place them in any order, are as follows.
Sesuit Harbor Cafe: outdoor dining with Raw Bar, with a glorious location on a small harbor
and marina. BYO wine/beer
The Raw Bar, Hyannis Harbor: Try the Jumbo while you watch the boat traffic from the open upper deck
The Black Sheep, Yarmouth Port: Friendly service with outdoor terrace. Our local pub – we love it! Not water-side
Wellfleet Bookstore: 100 metres from world famous Wellfleet oyster beds. Second floor balcony
overlooking beach and Bay
Chatham Fish Pier Market Kiosk: Find a place to sit and take in the Harbor view and watch the seals perform around the fishing boats
Chart Room at Crosby’s (Osterville): Boatyard location with view across marina. Lobster salad
is also good
